FAQs

WHAT IS SOCIALSHUFFLE?

Social Shuffle is a social networking site helping you and your friends to meet new groups of like-minded people for fun nights out.

REGISTRATION AND JOINING

How do I set up a group?

Click on the 'Create Group' link from your 'My Profile' page. Enter a group name of your choice, or use our group name suggestion function if you need inspiration. Enter a number of details about the group, these will be shown on your group homepage, and other users will be able to search for your group by these details. Once the group is created, the next step is to invite people to join. Enter in the name and email address of those that you wish to invite. Anyone you invite to your group will be sent an email asking them to register and then join your group

What is Facebook Connect?

This facility allows you to connect using your Facebook account and saves time on registration as it imports your Facebook profile picture and some of your personal details.

How do I join a group?

If someone has invited you to join a group, and you have yet not registered with Social Shuffle, you will be sent an email with a link to the registration page. Click on the link and fill in a few simple details to register on the site. You'll then be taken to a link with group invitations, where you will be able to view the group and accept or reject the invitation. If you already have a profile at Social Shuffle, you'll be sent an email notification of a group invitation and will be taken to a link to join the group. You will also be able to see any outstanding group invites on your profile page

How do I add people to a group?

Only the group leader who founded the group can add new members. On the 'My Profile' page, click on the group's name, click 'Invite more people' then enter their names and email addresses to send invitations

Can I send a request to join a group?

At the moment, you are only able to join a group through invitation. If you know a group member and would like to join, we suggest you ask the group leader (the founder of the group) to send you an invitation to the group

How many groups can I be a member of?

There is no limit - the more the merrier!

What is the maximum and minimum group size?

The maximum group size is 20. We think a good number of people per group for each Shuffle is between 6 and 10. Having a large group will make it easier to get enough people along on the night

Is it free to join?

Yes, it's completely free to join and search for groups. We charge groups to set up Shuffles. Both groups must pay £1.00 per event. However, you will not be charged unless both groups agree that to attend a Shuffle with each other. To avoid Shuffle request spamming, we will take payment details from you when you request a Shuffle but we will not take any money from you until the invited group accepts your Shuffle invitation

SUGGESTING / ACCEPTING

How do I find other groups?

Click on 'Search' and select the criteria that you would like to search by. Remember that some of the searchable criteria are only preferences and groups may be prepared to compromise on specific Shuffle location or type of night — so be as open-minded as possible to get the best results from your searches

What are favourites?

Adding groups as favourites allows you to suggest groups that you might like to Shuffle with to other members of your own groups. If you add a group to favourites, it will be shown in your favourites box on your 'My Profile' page and on the favourites box of the groups to which you added them. You are able to browse all of the groups added to favourites by your group members and consider requesting a Shuffle

What am I required to do if I propose a Shuffle on behalf of my group?

If you request a Shuffle with another team, you automatically become the Shuffle organiser for your group. As Shuffle organiser, we ask that you agree to pay the £1.00 Shuffle event fee if the other group accepts the request. You will not be charged unless they accept. If the other team accepts, the team member that accepted and agreed to pay on behalf of their group will be their Shuffle organiser. Your email addresses will be exchanged and you will be able to contact each other to arrange your Shuffle. You also have the option to use the Shuffle availability planner to propose and agree upon the best date. Groups often choose to pay the organiser back for the fee on the night through the drinks or food bill

What do I have to do if I accept a Shuffle on behalf of my group?

You become the Shuffle organiser on behalf of your group and we ask that you pay the £1.00 Shuffle event fee. Your email address will be exchanged with the Shuffle event organiser from the other group and you will be able to contact each other to arrange your Shuffle. You also have the option to use the Shuffle availability function and to propose and agree upon the best date to Shuffle on

If I'm a member of more than one group, how do I make sure that I propose on behalf of the correct group?

You will be asked to confirm which group you are requesting a Shuffle on behalf of when you request a Shuffle

When do I pay?

If you are requesting a Shuffle, you will be asked to pay the Shuffle event fee when you make the request. This is intended to prevent Shuffle request 'spam' and ensure that every Shuffle request is made with the intention of attending a Shuffle. We use Paypal's delayed payment system and you will not be charged if the other group does not accept within 30 days

How long does a Shuffle request (and commitment to pay) last for?

A Shuffle request will expire after 30 days. If the invited group has not accepted your request by then, you are no longer committed to payment. You may re-request a Shuffle if you wish to. You will not be charged twice

How do I make sure my group will want to go on a Shuffle I propose or accept?

Try to discuss a potential Shuffle with your group before proposing - we hope that the favourites function will help you with this

SELECTING A DATE FOR THE SHUFFLE

How does the availability widget work?

Shuffle Date Selection Preview Click to preview

We've found that finding a suitable date for a Shuffle is the most difficult aspect of the arrangement process. Group organisers are able to select potential dates for a Shuffle. All group members are then able to update their availability on these dates. Group organisers can then make the decision about the best date when most people can attend and propose, accept and agree on a date. If none of the selected dates are suitable, more dates can be entered and group members will be asked to update their availability again

Do I need to give away/exchange my email address?

Only the group organisers email addresses will be exchanged in order to arrange where and when to meet. We believe that it would be difficult to arrange a Shuffle without exchanging contact details, as there may be last minute changes that you will want to discuss with the other Shuffle organiser

What if no dates work for both teams?

If none of the selected dates are suitable, more dates can be entered and group members will be asked to update their availability again

How do the two groups agree on a date for a Shuffle?

Once group members have updated their availability, group organisers will be able to see a summary of availability and to propose one date to the other organiser. The other Shuffle organiser can then either accept or reject this suggestion

How do we agree on a venue for the Shuffle?

We have a number of ideas for possible venues for a Shuffle on our ideas page. Some of these venues offer special deals to Social Shuffle events. There’s also always the option to do something a bit different and go for an activity such as wine tasting, cocktail making or a cooking class. You are under no obligation to choose one of our affiliates and can suggest anywhere you want to go

What do I do if the other group does not show up for a Shuffle?

Please report the group to us at team@socialshuffle.co.uk if they do not attend without giving prior notice. We will investigate this and take actions to resolve the issue. Obviously there are some eventualities where cancellation is unavoidable and we would encourage you to try to re-arrange your Shuffle. We will refund any Shuffle event payments where this is not possible

Can I get a refund if I change my mind?

Unfortunately, once the payment has been taken and your contact details have been exchanged, we cannot refund your money. If your group can no longer make the agreed date, please contact the other group to arrange an alternative date

How will I know when and where the Shuffle is (if I am not the arranger?)

The agreed Shuffle date will be displayed on your group homepage and your 'My Profile' page. We suggest that you contact your Shuffle organiser and ensure that you know where you are supposed to be and when

How will I tell my group when and where the Shuffle is (if I am the arranger?)

We assume that groups already know each other before joining social Shuffle and as such will be able to contact each other outside of the site. However, the agreed Shuffle date will be displayed on your group's homepage and your 'My profile' pages. We suggest that you contact your group members separately to ensure that they know where and when to meet for the Shuffle

10. What if my group is bigger than the maximum size the other group would prefer?

We would advise you to try to choose groups that are roughly the same size as yours. The groups you go out with don't always have to be exactly the same size but it's usually more fun for both groups that way!

GENERAL QUESTIONS

I've forgotten my login details!

Please click here or go to 'Forgotten Password' to do a password reset

I'm having problems uploading my profile picture

The most common reason will be trying to upload a picture that is too big, the maximum size is 4mb. We suggest you crop your pictures (this is also good for ensuring your face can be seen in the picture)

Do I need a photo?

Not strictly — if you are using Facebook connect your Facebook profile picture will be imported automatically. You can choose to have no picture on the website at all but this will probably mean that fewer people will want to meet

I don't get it — isn't this just a dating website? Do I need to be single?

No! It's for anyone; whether you are single, in a relationship, engaged, married, divorced etc! The site is designed to allow groups of friends to meet other groups of like-minded people. Groups can be mixed, and you can arrange to meet groups of the same sex, a different sex or mixed groups

Is there a minimum or maximum age?

The minimum age for joining the site is 18. There is no maximum age

I don't live in London — can I still use the site?

Yes, although we are mainly focussed on London, you can also set up Shuffles in Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool and Edinburgh

How long will it take to approve my profile or new group?

We will try to moderate all new additions to the site within 72 hours — sorry if it ends being longer but this is just because we are busy making the site better in other ways!

Why was my profile or group rejected?

In order to avoid causing offence to any other users, we must maintain strict standards regarding what appears on the site. Uploaded photos must be appropriate for the all users and group names must not contain any language likely to cause offence

Why do I have to pay?

For a few reasons; firstly, to ensure you turn up on the night! We feel that if no payment was made, groups would be less likely to honour their agreement to meet another group. In addition, websites are expensive to set up and maintain, and we hate advertising so in order to cover our costs we decided to charge a modest amount per Shuffle. Groups often choose to pay the organiser back for the fee on the night through the drinks or food bill

Are my credit / debit card details safe?

YES. Your payment details are taken through a secure server. We don't authorise your payment details, this is done via a secure connection by way of our payment provider PayPal using the latest encryption technology available. No one at Social Shuffle has access to your bank details as we do not store such information

What do you do with my personal details?

We do not pass your email address, or any other details about you, to anyone else. Your personal details are kept confidential on our secure database. Only our admin department have access to your details, and we only look at those details when approving your profiles or responding to your queries. Please see our privacy policy for full details.

How do I turn off receiving emails from Social Shuffle?

We hope that the email notifications of activity relating to your account are useful, however, you have the option to select which types of activity you would like to be notified of. Go to 'My Profile' and click 'Edit Personal Details', and follow the 'Edit Notification Settings' link

Will meeting other groups be safe?

Any time you meet strangers you will need to be mindful of your safety and meeting groups from Social Shuffle is no different. Before meeting the other group, the Shuffle organiser will receive contact details of the other group leader and can ensure a suitable safe Shuffle is arranged. You are responsible for your own safety but one of the advantages of group events like this is that you are with your friends, so look out for each other and enjoy the evening!
